Academics
One of Our Mother of Sorrows School’s greatest attractions is the strength of its academics. Here are some highlights:
During the past year, results of the 2007 Iowa Skills national standardized test indicated that we again scored among the top 10 percent of elementary schools tested in the U.S.—including both public and private schools. In fact, Our Mother of Sorrows School ranked in the 92nd percentile—versus a nationwide elementary school average of the 50th percentile. Results in specific academic areas include:- top 5th percentile in Social Studies and Language
- top 8th percentile in Science, Vocabulary and Reading
- top 12th percentile in Math
Our teachers are also noted for taking the educational experience beyond their classroom walls, with wellness hikes in Stackhouse Park, visits to working farms and a historical walking tour of Johnstown via the Inclined Plane. In Grades 7 and 8, lessons on American history and culture come alive with interactive field trips to sites as varied as Washington, DC, Antietem, Gettysburg, the US Naval Academy, Baltimore, MD and New York City.
